The Happy Hour
After a few years off the ActOut Theatre Group is coming back with a brand new play. Lexington will be the world premier of "The Happy Hour" by Stephen Currens.
Stephen has been a successful play write for many years having had the play, "Gorey Stories", on Broadway in 1978 and revived at UK last year. Stephen is from Versailles but lived in New York for several years before returning to the area. ActOut is very happy that he has let us primer his new work.
The play will open April 21st at the Downtown Arts Center & will play the 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30 and May 5, 6, and 7. All shows at 8:00 pm and are $15, $12 for students.
SYNOPSIS
Time: 1980-86
Place: a Mid-American Town and memories of New York City
"At the prime age of 33, Seth Seabrook is at a loss to explain why he is still alive", and is perhaps a bit guilty that he is. You see, he has fled the City and the early 80's AIDS crisis for the supposed safety of Mid-America where he "hopes nothing will happen", but alas it does. Struggling with a sense of overwhelming loss and the implied culpability of those who have fallen victim to what society called "that gay disease" as well as his own, self doubts, Seth places himself in counseling with what turns out to be a thoroughly unprepared therapist; GUS. Seth finds that he must not only work through his grief, fear and spiritual doubt, but also must educate his icily clinical and unenlightened counselor.
Directed by J. Michael McCullough and starring in alphabetical order; Bob Camp as Aaron, Bill Chandler as Gus, John LaMar Cole as Paul, Darrell de Rosette as Teddy, Paul Dick as Doc, Bill Glover II as Gordon, Matt Kelder as Chance, Max Reid as Seth and Burley Thomas as Jack.
